Genital Herpes is an STD caused by two types of viruses. The viruses are called Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2). Oral Herpes is usually caused by HSV-1 and can result in cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth. However, most people with HSV-1 display no symptoms at all. Oral herpes (HSV-1) is generally transmitted in children and adults through saliva, and can be spread from the mouth to the genitals through oral sex. Herpes infection can cause sores or breaks in the skin or lining of the mouth, vagina, and rectum and thereby provide a pathway for HIV into the body. Since Genital Herpes increases the number of CD4 cells that HIV targets for entry into the body, some cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-1.
